As a volunteer, I was responsible for assisting with the Poll and PAV (mail/absentee) Voters Walk within the community. I spoke to and educated various residents about Mary's background, the initiatives she stands for and the issues she plans to improve and impact. She firmly believes that community safety, a strong advocate for a clean environment, affordable housing for low-income residents, people with disabilities, and seniors, infrastructure repairs and making Long Beach accessible to all residents

  • CIP Long Beach Student Volunteers Complete Beautification Project at VA Hospital

    College Internship Program

    CIP Long Beach was able to support the VA Hospital Patient Garden & Barber City Women’s Club of Westminster, CA with planting geraniums on the property for Autism Awareness Month. The Barber City Women’s Club was established in 1917, and this year is their 90th birthday of providing community charity work.

    Netflix’s original dramedy, “Atypical” which premiered August 11, delves into the life of a young man entering his senior year in high school who happens to be a high-functioning autistic person.

    The show follows “Sam” and his family through this turbulent period, giving its audience “not in the club” an eye-opening opportunity to connect with this family and their daily issues. My son, Anthony, who is on the autism spectrum, himself, was given a small role. His name is “Christopher”…

    And, so, when he was hired last fall to work at the Happiest Place on Earth, new-employee orientation didn’t reveal anything he didn’t already know.

    But the 24-year-old man might not have landed his dream job had he not been in a Long Beach program that helps autistic high school graduates make the leap to college and the job market.

    CACoD consists of community members from the City of Long Beach and representatives from public and private agencies, which provide services to the disability community within the City. CACoD’s purpose is to advise the Mayor, City Council and City Manager on concerns affecting the disability community.

    Citizens Advisory Commission on Disabilities (CACoD)
    CACoD consists of community members from the City of Long Beach and representatives from public and private agencies, which provide services to the disability community within the City. CACoD’s purpose is to advise the Mayor, City Council and City Manager on concerns affecting the disability community.

    Department of Developmental Services (DDS)
    the agency through which the State of California provides services and supports to individuals with developmental disabilities. These disabilities include intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism and related conditions. Services are provided through state-operated developmental centers and community facilities, and contracts with 21 nonprofit regional centers. The regional centers serve as a local resource to help find and access the services and supports available to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

    Disabled Resources Center (DRC)
    The mission of the agency is, “To empower people with disabilities to live independently in the community, to make their own decisions about their lives and to advocate on their own behalf”.

    Disability Mentoring Day (DMD)
    City Hall participated in Disability Mentoring Day. Disability Mentoring Day is a national event coordinated by the American Association of People with Disabilities that promotes career development for students with disabilities through job shadowing and hands-on career exploration. Disability Mentoring Day is designed to bring students with disabilities into the workplace where they can learn firsthand about career opportunities and experience a half-day in a professional work environment.

On Saturday, October 26, 2019, a public celebration to commemorate Disability Employment Awareness Month was held at Michelle Obama Library, located at 5870 Atlantic Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90805. Lead Career Coordinator/Counselor, Jocelyn Howard was the guest speaker during the 30-minute program. In addition to celebrating “Right, Talent, Right Now” the event explored “Community Engagement & Social Networking” and included a resource fair specific to the disability community.
